The book "History of Ukraine-Rus"
The work of the outstanding artist and public figure M.M. Arkas is a great historiographical monument of the early twentieth century. Conceived in 1901 as an essay for the education of Mykola's grandson, it has evolved into a broad and profound study of Ukrainian history. Arkas's goal in creating this book was to present the history of Ukraine in the most accessible form, understandable even to an unprepared reader. The book was edited by writer, historian and philologist Vasyl Domanytsky, author of the first complete edition of Kobzar.
The simplicity and accessibility of the book's presentation made it extremely popular. The first edition (700 copies), published in 1908, sold out within a month. The author's worldview, perception and understanding of history completely excluded both pro-Russian and nationalist extremes. Arkas's history is pro-Ukrainian. The book is written from the perspective of the nationalist movement, which assumes that the people, not the state, are the creators of history. The book is intended for a wide range of readers interested in the history of Ukraine.
